I created this blog so that people like me, i.e., baby boomers who have aging parents that need various kinds of help and support, can discuss the issues and concerns we have about taking care of our parents. With your tolerance, I’d like to relate to readers of my blog the very abbreviated story behind its creation.
My parents lived in Florida for many years. When my father died, my mother happily stayed in Florida for many more years until she entered into her ninetieth decade. Then she started having problems. She would sound totally discombobulated on the phone; she would imagine TV personalities were in her living room and speaking to her directly; she would call me in NY and ask me where she was; and things continued to get worse. Needless to say I became very concerned about her safety and welfare and her ability to continue living on her own in Florida, especially while I remained living up here in the northeast.
So after going down to Florida every 2 weeks for several months, I brought my mom back here to what I anticipated would be her residency in an assisted-living facility. But while in transition, she broke her hip, required surgery and extensive rehab and as a consequence was unable to continue living independently even in an assisted-living arrangement. Ultimately, I had to place her in a nursing home.
This short story doesn’t begin to relay the upheaval and stress the situation caused in the lives of all of our family members, including my most remarkable mother’s. Now I want to tell you that there’s a unique organization out there that offers what’s needed to both the aging parent who wants to continue living independently as well as to the adult child who wants to be able to sleep at night without worrying about their “independent” parent. Visit www.securecare1.com to find out more; I’d also be delighted if you want to share your experience or concerns on this issue by blogging. (This is my first blog entry so I’ve got a lot to learn- please be patient)
